By Lou & Chris Chapman

This artwork was inspired by recent adverts about the plight of the bee due to the rising numbers of Asian hornets in the Devon area. The Asian hornet is an invasive species and a threat to bees and other pollinators. They have no natural predator in the UK, and numbers can increase if not controlled. An Asian hornet is three times the size of a bee, and we have tried to depict this scale in this work.
The sculpture is made from recycled materials, primarily a children’s garden trampoline, which forms the legs and hanging structure. Other materials include plant baskets, cans, fabrics from scrapstores, house insulation foam, an umbrella, plastic bags, plastic bottles, discarded re-bar and scrap metal.
