In heraldry, the term sea-lion is a legendary
creature that has the head and upper body of a lion, but with webbed forelimbs and a fish tail. It might be familiar to you – it is found on the Devon coat of arms! The sea-lion symbolises strength, dominion over the sea, and bold actions taken at sea.
Make It Thursday (a social craft and support
group), which meets at The Makery on Thursday mornings, chose this symbol for our TRAIL sculpture.
Bold action needs to be taken by individuals, by Councils, by the Government and by nations, to ensure that our oceans are no longer polluted by micro-plastics, run-off from agriculture and
industry, sewage, spillage and other sources.
Our oceans, their corals and creatures are literally dying. We need to have the strength, like the sea-lion, to ACT NOW and take dominion over the sea, and clean up our oceans.
The Sea Lion was made using insulation foam, a by-product of the building industry, and foil wrap. flattened bottle caps and scraps of hessian fabrics.
The design concept was supplied by MIT creative leader and community artist Sam Lock, and the sculpture was created by the MIT group and additional help over several weeks.
Make It Thursday is a creative social group that meets weekly at The Makery @TAAG, 8 Northumberland Place, Teignmouth.
