Our inspiration began with a simple but powerful intention: to bring dementia into public consciousness, out of the shadows, out of the silence, and into open, honest conversation. We wanted our sculpture to reflect the courage it takes to face dementia directly, and the comfort that comes from not facing it alone.
The Ness Care Group provides specialist dementia and cognitive‑health support across Devon. Since 2017, our Memory Hubs have offered welcoming, enjoyable days built around conversation, friendship, shared meals, local outings and purposeful activity. Carers and Guests often tell us that being part of a supportive community helps them feel seen, understood and connected — especially at a time when dementia can shrink social circles and make people feel as though their world is closing in. Their reflections shaped the heart of our piece: a reminder that belonging matters, and that no one should navigate dementia behind closed doors.
