The Wheel of Fortune
By Amy McCarthy
Much of our native wildlife is under extreme pressure from loss of habitat and climate change. We are constantly building on and developing over the wild areas that our wildlife
calls home. Yet all of these creatures are part of the web of life, pollinating, feeding on pestsmor indeed becoming food themselves in the food chain. Every time we lose a species the food chain and rich tapestry of nature become weaker.
This sculpture reminds us that every action has a consequence and many are turning the wheel of fortune against the creatures we share this planet with. 10 of the most endangered UK species are depicted in this recycled glass mosaic, made from scrap glass and a toughened glass tabletop found in a skip I have painted 10 species in this piece; from well-known and much-loved creatures to lesser-known insects – all important to our eco system and critically endangered. Red squirrel, Hedgehog, Cicada, Wart-biter cricket, Turtle dove, Small tortoise shell butterfly, Natterjack toad, Bearded false darkling beetle, Reddish buff moth, Long horn beetle
